Karelia Tobacco Co. - A Shining Example Of How Corpirations Should Operate - Gives Workers 1.8mln in Bonuses!

The Karelia name has been closely associated with tobacco since 1888, when George and Stathis Karelias founded the Karelia Tobacco Company. The fundamental values of this family business since its establishment continue to guide the Company in the ever-changing world of business. One example of this is the whopping 1,8 million Euros in bonuses that the company gave to its employees for their outstanding performance in 2012.

Even though Greece has been slapped with three memorandums, is about to enter a sixth year of recession, and has a registered unemployment rate that has surpassed 26 percent, the Karelia company decided to award its workers for a job well done in 2012, because this is one family business (one of the very few that is) that has always placed integrity, common sense, and "filotimo" over greed and from what it looks like it proved it once again.

This is a shining example of how a corporation should operate...

Tobacco investments for 2012 amounted to 7 million, and the company decided to give 1.8 million in additional benefits to its employees. Karelia's Chief Executive, Mr Andrew Carrel, announced this during a speech at the annual New Year's celebration, which took place last weekend at Kalamazoo.

The benefits announced by Mr. Carrel include:
  • A winter allowance of 200 Euros was given to workers for outerwear (or specifically for those working outdoors).
  • An allowance of 850.00 Euros is to be given to employees who did not skip and/or miss a day of work throughout the year.
  • An emergency financial allowance of 1,400 Euros is to be given to employees who have children that are studying at universities and/or colleges. And if these children have been successful in their studies and have recorded high marks, then an additional 500.00 Euros will be added to this bonus.
  • Also, the Company plans to gift laptops to every child who excelled in his or her studies in 2012.
  • Employees with monthly earnings of over 1,700 Euros are to receive an extraordinary financial bonus of 750.00 Euros.
  • Employees with monthly earnings between 1200.00 and 1699.00 Euros will receive an extraordinary financial bonus of 1.500 Euros. And any worker from this category that also has a child under 18 will get an additional 700.00 Euros in aid.
  • Finally employees with monthly earnings of no more than 1,200 Euros are to receive an extraordinary financial bonus of 2.500.00 Euros, and those who have 2 minor children or more are to also get an additional 400.00 Euros for each child that is under 18.
How's that for "filotimo and common sense!"

Heck... We even want to work for these people!
